Workshop-descrition:
Tufting (from the English verb "to tuft,” meaning to decorate with tufts) refers to a technique for producing textile surfaces with a pile layer. It can be viewed as a hybrid technique combining sewing and embroidery.
In this workshop, we will explore the history and technique of tufting, as well as the construction of the tufting frame and the stretching of the tufting cloth. As we examine the wool scraps and T-shirts you bring, we will also discuss the issues of fast fashion and textile waste. With an introduction to operating the tufting machines (cut pile and loop pile), we will begin working with our materials: cutting the T-shirts, designing a custom rug, transferring the pattern onto the tufting cloth, and tufting the rug. We also plan to tuft a large piece together as a group.
At the end of the workshop, we will present our work.
