Event Description
Women remain underrepresented in science and research-based industries.
Across the globe, science continues to be a predominantly male-dominated field. Worldwide, women leave academic careers far more frequently than their male counterparts and are less likely to be employed in research institutions – despite the fact that university enrollment rates are nearly equal between the genders.
Even with the same qualifications, women in research often hold lower-ranking positions than their male colleagues. In countries of the Global South, women are even less integrated into scientific fields than in OECD countries. In Afghanistan, female students and scientists currently have no prospects at all. In December 2022, the Taliban government banned women from accessing higher education. This policy violates basic Human Rights and the fundamental freedoms of women and girls. Access to education is a universal right that must not be denied on the basis of gender.
In this online discussion, we speak with female scientists and students from Iran, Afghanistan, Ukraine, and Styriaabout their career paths, professional perspectives, how they see their future, and what gives them hope.
This conversation highlights the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 10, 1948 – in particular:
Article 23 – Right to Work & Protection Against Unemployment
Article 26 – Right to Education
Speakers:
Amena Karimyan (Afghanistan) – Civil engineer and astronomer, currently living in Stuttgart
